The King of Gear (TKOG) - Mini Glitch

The King of Gear Mini Glitch pedal is a unique effect, designed and produced by TKOG in New York. It is designed to reproduce the Max/MSP randomized “stutter” effect that Jonny Greenwood of Radiohead uses. The result is that the finished pedal offers a variety of glitch effects, both fixed and random.

MODES:

The Mini Glitch v2 has 3 modes, each of which uses a different mechanism to trigger glitches:

Random Mode (RND) starts and stops glitching at random, which replicates the Max/MSP patch on which the pedal is based.

Switched Mode (SW) starts glitching when the footswitch is depressed. It can be set for either momentary or latching functionality.

Threshold Mode (TRSH) starts a new glitch each time it receives an input signal over a set threshold.

All 3 modes offer the option to randomize the length of the glitching sample, or to set it to a fixed length (up to 1 second in RND and SW modes, and 500ms in TRSH mode).

DRY-PATH:

The Mini Glitch pedal also offers control over the analog dry path. With the dry gate set to “MUTE”, the dry signal will be silenced when glitching is active, mirroring the original Max/MSP patch and sounding similar to a broken CD-player. Alternatively, the gate can be set to pass, regardless of glitch activity, which allows you to layer your dry signal with the effect.

CONTROLS:

The Sample Size Knob controls the length of the glitch in all three modes, but also offers a unique secondary function in each mode.

  • In Random Mode, it adjusts how frequently new random values are generated, thus determining how often glitching starts and stops (at very low settings, glitching will occur infrequently, but may persist for a long time when it does).
  • In Switched Mode, it adjusts the maximum sample length when the knob is set to the “rnd” position (the maximum random sample length is fixed in the other two modes).
  • In Threshold Mode, it adjusts the threshold level.

The volume of the effected signal is adjustable via an internal trim pot. It is named EFFECT VOLUME inside the pedal, and can be turned up or down (see owner's manual below). The dry signal is kept at unity gain (except when it is muted, of course).

RECOMMENDED SETTINGS:

For a traditional Greenwood glitch sound, set both toggle switches to the left, the Sample Size knob to “rnd”, press the footswitch to activate the pedal, and start playing. Anything you do will be turned into a delightful glitchy mess!

To layer your playing with a loop of a fixed length, set both toggle switches to the right, set the Sample Size knob to the desired loop length, and press the footswitch to capture a loop.

For “broken CD” sounds based on the notes you most emphasize, set the Mode toggle to the center, the Dry Gate toggle to the left, the Sample Size knob to the desired loop length, depress the footswitch to begin recording, and play strong each time you want a new glitch to begin. Set the Dry Gate toggle to the right to layer your playing with the glitching.
